CD34+ Stem Cells Show Protective Effects on Damaged Retina

December 3, 2019

Intravitreal injections of human bone marrow CD34+ stem cells prevent further retinal damage associated with diabetic retinopathy. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have shown that stem cell injections elicit a protective effect on retinas damaged by diabetes. Using a diabetic retinopathy mouse model system, the scientists demonstrated that intravitreal injections of human bone marrow CD34+ stem cells resulted in homing and integration of the cells into the damaged retina and preservation of the retinal vasculature. The study provides a potential…

Impaired MSC Maturation May Lead To Fragile Bone Formation

December 3, 2019

Mitochondrial dysfunction may impair MSC maturation and inhibit cell proliferation, contributing to fragile bone formation in SRS patients. Patients with Snyder-Robinson Syndrome (SRS), an X-linked recessive condition, exhibit deficient Spermidine Synthase (SMS) gene expression as well as neurodevelopmental defects and osteoporosis, often leading to extremely fragile bones. Although several studies have explored the possible mechanisms by which the disease causes impaired bone formation, the actual cause is yet unknown. One study proposes a correlation between impaired bone formation and dysfunctional multipotent stromal…

UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD

November 14, 2019

THE POWER OF THE ADAPTABLE CELLS Cord blood transplants hold promise for treating a wide range of diseases from cancer and diabetes to rare genetic disorders. Within the cord blood are blood-forming stem cells, known as hematopoietic stem cells. Transplantation of these stem cells into patients with chronic or life-threatening diseases allows regrowth or regeneration of healthy cells. Thus, cord blood stem cell transplants are a form of regenerative medicine, a branch of medicine that replaces, regrows, or repairs tissues damaged by…

Factors That Affect PBMC Viability And Recovery

November 12, 2019

I’ve spent many years working with blood and have seen quite a lot of odd issues arise that impact cell viability and recovery. Such as walking across a parking lot in 30-degree weather with freshly collected blood set inside an insulated box, only to have the temperature of the blood drop enough to cause the Ficoll to fail. To adding a non-heat-inactivated serum into a cell thawing protocol only to have my cells die. Some issues I should have known better while…

Improved Method for Quick Identification of Mosquito Blood Meals

November 6, 2019

A new test offers an improved PCR-based method for the identification of human-, nonhuman mammal-, and bird-derived mosquito blood meals. West Nile virus (WNV), malaria, yellow fever, and Zika are some mosquito-borne diseases that affect hundreds of millions of people each year. The identification of host feeding sources and preferences are essential for studies into the dynamics of transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. An underlying issue is that a mosquito can feed upon multiple hosts, making the identification of host feeding source problematic.…
