Macrophages
Macrophages are large phagocytic cells that play a crucial role in the innate immune system. Derived from monocytes, they are found in nearly all tissues:
- Engulf and digest pathogens (like bacteria, viruses, and fungi), dead cells, and cellular debris through phagocytosis.
- Activate immune responses by secreting signaling molecules (cytokines) that attract other immune cells to sites of infection or injury.
- Present antigens to T cells, functioning as antigen-presenting cells (APCs) that help coordinate adaptive immune responses.
Macrophages are essential for clearing infections, wound healing, and maintaining tissue health by removing dead or damaged cells.
