B Cells - Lymphocytes

B cells are a type of lymphocyte that play a critical role in the adaptive immune system. They originate in the bone marrow and are primarily responsible for producing antibodies. Key types of B cells include:

  • Plasma cells: Plasma B cells secrete large amounts of antibodies that target and neutralize pathogens like bacteria and viruses.
  • Memory B cells: After an infection, these cells “remember” the pathogen and respond more quickly if the body encounters it again.
  • Naive B Cells: Naive B cells are mature B cells that have not encountered an antigen.

B cells are essential for humoral immunity, which involves the production of antibodies to defend against infections.
